Welcome to the inaugural edition of the Superintendent’s Corner Newsletter. My name is Luis R. Valentino, Ed.D., and I am the Superintendent-in-Residence with Summit K12. This monthly publication aims to serve a singular purpose: to create a space for superintendents to explore the realities of district leadership, reflect on what is effective, and collectively strengthen their approach to successfully leading in these challenging times.
In today’s dynamic educational landscape, superintendents face increasingly complex challenges that require a comprehensive strategy to lead with purpose and manage with practical wisdom. This newsletter is based on insights from numerous observations and conversations with district leaders across the country who have shared their triumphs, struggles, and everyday experiences.
The recent closure of the U.S. Department of Education has created a vacuum leading to a lack of federal guidance and oversight that districts have relied on for over 45 years. This shift is accompanied by steep reductions in federal education funding, forcing school districts nationwide to make difficult decisions regarding program viability and staffing levels. In 2023, a RAND Corporation study reported that 80% of superintendents described their jobs as “often” or “always” stressful. Following the developments over the past few months,, that pressure has only intensified.
Even more challenging is the impact of heightened deportation priorities. In districts with significant immigrant populations, entire families face heart-wrenching uncertainty, with school districts struggling to support them. Enrollment patterns have become unpredictable as families withdraw their children from school out of fear. The National Center for Education Statistics (2025) documented that enrollment declines have accelerated beyond the previous 2.5% drop since 2019.
Despite these incredible challenges, superintendents are finding ways forward:
The role of the superintendent has never been more challenging or more important than it is today. The reality of balancing budget cuts, staffing concerns, family fears, and more while keeping students, staff, and communities at the center every day can, at times, be overwhelming and seem insurmountable.
What matters most at this moment in our history is for you, our educational leaders, to not lose hope and to maintain clarity of mission. While federal structures and funding continue to diminish, your fundamental purpose remains unchanged. Every child you serve deserves access to a quality education, and it is essential to hold firmly to this principle, while remaining undeterred.
As we continue this publication series, we invite you to share your story, including the challenges you face and the innovative solutions you are implementing. The path ahead may be uncertain, but we walk it together, united by our commitment to the students and communities we serve.
In solidarity and service.
